The house is still there, metal roof. The snake is not. I touched its skin and it glared at me.

The house in Chiba was built in 1620. It had a wood-burning bath tub and a well. Alas, the cypress forest that surrounded it has been chopped down, and there is a golf course where the old trees used to be. I once saw a snake as thick around as my arm near that old house.
